High School English Survey

High School English Survey I (Grades 9–12) — Not offered 2024–25

Teacher: TBD

Description: Through the integrated study of English and Literature, students will develop a growing appreciation, even a love, of storytelling in all its different formats. This is a survey course focusing on a wide berth of topics, preparing the student for higher levels of literary analysis and essay writing. Focuses include the four main literary genres (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama) as well as developing foundational upper-level reading, writing, and speaking skills, including oral presentations, group and online discussions, essay writing, research projects, and literary analysis. All texts will also be viewed through a Biblical worldview as we discuss how Christians can encounter the world of language arts in a manner that is pleasing to our Creator, the ultimate Storyteller. This 9th–10th grade class is intended to lead to High School English Survey II and the other upper-level Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) classes offered for the 11th and 12th grades.

Class Cost: N/A

Books:

    • The Wave by Todd Strasser
    • Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare (any unabridged version will be sufficient; I would recommend getting the Dover Thrift edition as it is inexpensive and includes helpful footnotes)
    • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
    • The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
    • Note: Students will need a physical copy of each text (please no e-books) to bring to class during the weeks we are studying them. I have found Dover Thrift Editions to be dependable and inexpensive.

    • Pencils/pens/highlighters (three colors preferred)
    • Notebook paper (perforated notebook or filler paper)
    • Binder (1.5 or 2 inches preferred)
